Kenya Operate

Micah Wilfong and Britney Grayson
Serving in Kijabe, Kenya since 2020.

Our Mission

To share the love of God by providing specialty pediatric surgical care and training the next generation of Christian pediatric surgeons for the continent of Africa.

Our
Story

Britney and Micah met in 2018 but they both independently felt called to missions before that. Britney’s life was changed when, as a Vanderbilt general surgery resident, she rotated at AIC Kijabe Hospital in 2015. After a lot of prayer and listening for the Lord, she knew she was called to full time ministry abroad in 2017 and the following year applied for the Post-Residency Program through World Medical Mission.

Micah spent 2013 living in Johannesburg, South Africa, as part of a missionary training program. He returned to the Indianapolis area and the business world after that, unsure of where or even if the Lord might be calling him to serve abroad again. When Britney and Micah met, it was a match made in… heaven 😊

They got married in 2019 and moved to Kijabe, Kenya in 2020.

About

Britney ministers to the physical and spiritual needs of Kenyan children and their families as a pediatric general surgeon. In Kenya, this means she does thoracic, abdominal, and urologic surgery as well as practicing a bit of gastroenterology and radiology to best serve her patients. She also works in a training program with 9 trainees from 6 different African countries, teaching and discipling them with an equal focus on spiritual growth and surgical skill.

A commercial real estate developer by trade, Micah spends his days supporting Britney and her ministry as much as possible. He leads bible studies for the nurse anesthesia students at the hospital and serves the community on the hospital’s housing committee. In his “spare” time, he also fires up the 3D printer to make different surgical supplies much needed in Britney’s practice.

Micah and Britney enjoy cooking, playing board games, and traveling.

Location

Kijabe is a town of 2,000 people 60 km (37 miles) northwest of Nairobi.

It is located on the steep escarpment of the Rift Valley, at 2200 m (7200 ft) elevation.

Partner With Us

Serving the Lord internationally is not something we could do on our own. God has called us to Kenya and connected us with spiritual support, personal encouragement, and financial partners along the way.

As our time with World Medical Mission has ended, we are back in the US for the first part of 2023 to raise the financial support required to return to Kijabe by mid-year.

Why do we need to raise support? Britney does not receive a paycheck from Kijabe Hospital. This is helpful to keep costs lower for our patients and, sometimes, provide services and opportunities that would otherwise not be available. The money we raise goes to the following expenses:

Our Partner Organizations

Our mission agency is Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC). CHSC was started in 2010 to meet the needs of healthcare professionals wishing to serve full time abroad. To train pediatric surgeons at AIC Kijabe Hospital, we work with two partner organizations, PAACS and BethanyKids.

AIC Kijabe Hospital is a 365 bed, level 5 teaching and referral hospital. We have 35 consultant physicians, over 50% Kenyan. The hospital hosts several surgical training programs, including general, orthopedic, and pediatric surgery as well as anesthesia.

BethanyKids is a non-profit organization established to train surgeons, fund operations, and provide wholistic care, including spiritual ministry as well as rehabilitation, for and to children across Africa. Pediatric Surgical graduates from BethanyKids’ joint program with PAACS work in 12 different African countries.

The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons was founded in 1996 to train African surgeons in Africa. Today, this organization trains doctors in 9 distinct surgical fields or sub-specialties, in 17 hospitals, in 11 African countries.
